STATUS/ACCOMPLISHMENTS Of course this weekly is in addition to our Great larger launch vehicle news that I sent out earlier this week. The systems team spent most of this week reviewing Mission Requirements Document (MRD) comments with each of the subsystems and instrument teams. The team plans to have a SRR draft version of the MRD available by next Thursday. The team has also been working on a presentation strategy to effectively present the ~500 requirements in a useful and informative manner. We started thinking about the changes in approach that are needed by our shift in launch vehicles and will spend part of next week helping to guide the spacecraft and instrument teams toward a path to the SCR. In the next few weeks, we will be working to get the entire SDO team (S/C & Instruments) on the same page with regard to one SCR concept. This includes tackling the mechanical/thermal/propulsion configuration, determining an appropriate mass limit (below the launch capability) to design for, and identifying changes to the grassroots costing. For the instruments, SHARPP funding for SPECTRE has moved forward and looks more favorable. Belgium (CSL) is trying to leverage hardware deliverables to help offset any funding issues, by working with PI's from Germany, Spain, and France. Even though there is no firm commitment from these countries, we want to be proactive so the project asked NRL to start assembling draft LOA's for Spain & Germany. To reduce costs & risks, NRL will be purchasing KCOR optics via an existing SECCHI purchase order. EVE provided an internal review schedule for the next few months and we are planning to visit them in late Feb. for an instrument review. We have been receiving Mission Assurance Requirements document comments from our Instrumenters and over the next couple of weeks we will resolve the differences. Please join us in welcoming Dean Pesnell to the SDO team. Dean will be serving as Assistant Project Scientist, and he brings with him a wealth of experience. He is currently serving as Deputy Project Scientist for the TIMED mission, and his research interests have ranged from the study of the solar interior to the impact of irradiance variations on Earth - truly a good match for SDO! Please cc: him on all Project Science emails from now on: pesnell--AT--gsfc.nasa.gov, (301) 286-4009. Thanks, Ken "Failure to prepare is preparing to fail."
