Subject: SDO Weekly Report for April 23, 2004 From: "Elizabeth A. Citrin" Date: Fri, 23 Apr 2004 13:45:51 -0400 To: ... SDO Weekly Report for April 23, 2004 The SDO Mission Confirmation Readiness Review (MCRR) was held on April 23, 2004. The review went very well, and all members of the GPMC recommended that SDO proceed into implementation. Both the IRT and SMO noted that the Project is in outstanding shape, and the GPMC Chair, Bill Townsend agreed. He noted that SDO’s success to date is a result of the excellence of the team and its attention to detail. Rob Lilly and Ken Schwer were commended for their leadership in bringing the SDO to this point so successfully! The next step in the process is the LWS Program MCRR on April 26, then both the Program and the Project will present to various HQ groups over the next 6 weeks. Dr. Alan Title of Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory, the PI for the AIA instrument, has just been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. This is an honor and we congratulate Dr. Title. He is already a member of the National Academy of Engineering. The new Project Manager, Liz Citrin, has officially moved into Building 15/210. Regulations prevent me from taking my phone number with me, so I have a new easy-to-remember extension--6-1222 (301-286-1222). One unfortunate result of this is that the GSFC telephone book and the blue book of critical contacts now have an incorrect number for me, but no regulations could be found to prevent this. In the systems engineering area, the Risk management meeting was held this week in preparation for the monthly risk meeting with the Project manager next week. The GN&C team completed and presented their Safehold trade to the SDO Systems Team. After a careful review, the systems team agreed with the GN&C recommendation to implement a "CSS-Tach" safehold controller approach. The SDN development continues to move forward, with the SDN team implementing a mitigation plan to continue testing to add a temporary memory part to the SDN BB while waiting for the planned memory device to be delivered. The Ground System PDR was held on April 21 and 22. The Review Team, chaired by Mr. Bob Menrad, pronounced the review “excellent” and indicated that the Ground System and Operations Team was well on its way to a successful implementation. Once again, the team was praised for their hard work and attention to detail. Ray Pages and Bill Potter were given credit for their leadership in these activities. Spacecraft development continued to progress, with particular emphasis on completing breadboards and initiating procurements. The cause of low output power in the SSPA breadboard was identified; a second SSPA breadboard is in assembly. The SDN breadboard was assembled and checked out without the SRAM. The SPN PCC ETU was in layout, the PSE SDN was in layout, and the GCE GIC and ASD breadboards were also in layout. The procurement team distributed a boilerplate SOW, sample Deliverables Item List, and sample RFO instructions for MidRange Procurements. The HGAS Gimbal Actuator and ECRA Spec and SOW were baselined, in preparation for release of the Gimbal Actuator and ECRA RFP through RSDO. Responses were received from the SBC Draft RFP; the SBC RFP is currently in policy/legal review. The AIA team continued the post-PDR documentation efforts with the release of the WBS Dictionary, and the HMI & AIA Software Management Plan while preparing for the flight model design and the structural model development. Preliminary analyses of the telescope alignment errors have also been released. LMSAL has received the Phase C/D proposal from SAO. Work on the EVE PDR RFAs continues to be a priority. Sixteen responses have been sent in out of 34 actions. Another ten responses are expected this week with the balance following shortly. The monthly schedule update was submitted early this week with all activities on track. Several EVE team members supported the SDO Ground System PDR with presentations on EVE ground system plans. The mechanical lead submitted several sketches of the new CCD support design for our information. A preliminary copy of the CCD/CEB/EEE Common Buy Proposal to place AIA procurements on the HMI contract was received and is currently being reviewed by the project. An official proposal from Stanford is expected next week. HMI placed Vision Composites under contract this week to provide the Optics Package structure, and held a kick-off meeting at the vendor. The shutter life test is scheduled to begin in the next week. Front illuminated thin-gate CCDs are scheduled to be delivered from e2v to HMI in mid-May 2004 for evaluation. -- Liz Citrin SDO Project Manager 301-286-1222 FAX 301-286-0214 Cell 410-241-0503
