The SDO team continues to achieve good progress in their design and development activities leading up to CDR. Schedule and budget progress were reviewed this week during Project Monthly meetings with all spacecraft subsystems and instruments. A reminder to team members (and friends of SDO) local to the Greenbelt area: the grand opening ceremony for the Planet Walk Sun Station is this Saturday the 18th of September at 10:30am on the B&A trail behind the Harandale Plaza. The weekly systems team meeting provided a follow up on the Ka-Band Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTA), which was covered in last week's meeting. This roundtable discussion focused on the engineering impacts of accommodating the TWTA as a backup option to the current in-house SSPA approach. The SDO mechanical team provided an overview of the accommodation study they performed over the last week, followed by TWTA updated information from Mike Powers, the Ka-Band RF lead. This initial study indicates that there are not any major technical impediments to accommodating the TWTA as a backup option on the SDO spacecraft, although some of the accommodations would impact mechanical design, electrical interface and operations concept portions of the mission, all of which will need to be addressed in greater detail if adoption appears likely. The systems team continued toevaluate procurement proposals, met with the parts team and representatives from local flight manufacturing facilities on further defining the SDO parts plan and process, continued efforts to update the SDO data capture budget to keep it in line with updates to the mission profile and operations concept, and continued work on reliability assessment efforts in preparation for the upcoming SDO CDR activities. Spacecraft procurement activities continue to progress at this time. Selections have been made for contract award of the HGAS Electrical Contact Ring assembly and the Propulsion System Propellant Tank. The Propulsion System Main Engine, ACS Thrusters and Pressure Regulator procurements are all in proposal review. In addition, the Attitude Control System Reaction Wheels, Inertial Reference Unit and Star Tracker procurements are in proposal review. With regard to our in-house avionics designs, efforts continued on a variety of breadboards. The C&DH Ka Comm Breadboard, C&DH Bulk Memory Card Breadboard and DC/DC Card Breadboard were all in fabrication. Testing continued on the PSE SDN Core Breadboard and PSE SDN ASD Breadboard. Testing continued on the GCE SDN Core Breadboard and the GCE ASD Breadboard. EVE continues to advance the build of the mechanical and electrical breadboards and engineering test units. MIT Lincoln Labs is supporting the engineering model CCD test at LASP this week to help characterize the CCD performance and test set-up influences. Life test of the CCD will be delayed about a week. Dennis Krus, the SDO parts engineer lead, visited LASP this week to finalize common buy part agreements with EVE. The SDO Product Assurance group continues to work with LASP to document critical processes for inclusion in the Performance Assurance Implementation Plan and completion of the supplier audit earlier this year. The EVE systems group responded to multiple Requests For Action this week from the SDO Mission PDR and the EVE IPDR. Much of the AIA team traveledthis week. The camera group discussed technical progress and proposed changes at e2v and RAL in the UK. A technical interchange meeting (TIM) was held at SAO to review the interfaces, discuss the upcoming structural model (SM) I&T flow, review contamination requirements, and review the current status of AIA thermal designs and trades. Progress was made on releasing SM secondary mirror spider and telescope assembly tube drawings; orders were placed for spider components and tube flanges. Following the successful completion of functional tests of the shutter and aperture selector mechanisms, all AIA life test mechanisms are now on order. Requests for quotation for the flight primary and secondary optics were received by 5 optics vendors with responses due September 21. Mission Assurance activities included X-ray characterization of second set of TriQuint MMICs to be used in life test of the Ka band transmitter. Percent voiding was found to be substantially reduced from the initial set and the PCC manufacturing review held at Northrop Grumman to go over all of the changes and problems found before building the remaining 7 ETU boards. -- Liz Citrin SDO Project Manager 301-286-1222 FAX 301-286-0214 Cell 410-241-0503
