SDO Weekly Report for October 8, 2004

Executive Summary:

All elements of the mission continue to make good progress towards
their CDR milestones. HMI held several peer reviews this week in
preparation for their CDR in November.
The spacecraft Flight Software PDR was conducted on Wednesday and
Thursday of this week. The Review went very well, with many elements
judged to be close to CDR level.

Detailed Report:

Spacecraft procurement activities continue to progress. A Small
Purchase Request for Quote was released for the Propulsion System
Helium Tanks. The Propulsion System Main Engine, ACS Thrusters and
Pressure Regulator procurements are all in proposal review. In
addition, the Attitude Control System Reaction Wheel, Inertial
Reference Unit, Star Tracker and Coarse Sun Sensor procurements are in
proposal review. RFIs were released for the Ka Band HGA, Ka Band TWTA
and S Band Transponder/Diplexer.

With regard to in-house avionics and development units, efforts
continued. The C&DH Bulk Memory Card Breadboard and DC/DC Card
Breadboard were in assembly. The C&DH Ka Comm Breadboard completed
assembly. Testing continued on the C&DH S Com ASD Breadboard and SDN
Core Breadboard. The PSE Solar Array Module, Output Module, Battery
Module and Deployment Module Breadboards were all in layout. Testing
continued on the GIC Breadboard, GCE SDN Core Breadboard and the GCE
ASD Breadboard. The Ka Band MMIC lifetest fixture was completed.

The spacecraft Flight Software PDR was conducted on Wednesday and
Thursday of this week. The Review went well.

In the Ground System area, the Mission Readiness Test team updated the
Mission Readiness Test Plan based on comments received and began
preparing the first draft of the Test Information Sheets (TIS)
required for each test. The first draft of the Mission Critical
Software list is being populated. The MOC team is preparing a MOC
Failure Mode Analysis and the first draft of the MOC Design
Specification was released for internal review. In addition, a draft
Space Network PLSA has been prepared.

The EVE team is preparing for a series of peer reviews in November to
cover the EVE instrument sub-systems. EVE continues to target
mid-December for its ICDR. The IPDR Chair closed out 23 of the 34 RFAs
from the review based on responses from the EVE team. The Chair is
working to close the additional 10 RFA responses he has from the EVE
team. Discussions and arrangements continue to be made to plate and
coat EVE ETU hardware at the GSFC shop.

HMI held two days of peer reviews covering the thermal, structure,
optics, filters, and mechanism designs of the optics package for the
instrument. GSFC participated in the peer review along with external
Lockheed Martin experts. The HMI optics package structural model has
completed a dry fit inspection in preparation for assembly, and the
HMI mass model drawings have been completed. The testing on the filter
oven controller brassboards has completed, and controller brassboards
for the ETU filter oven are in fabrication. The demonstration back
illuminated CCDs were inspected during a visit to e2v last week and
are ready to be shipped to LMSAL.

The AIA team continues the development of the Structural Model (SM)
with drawing release, parts procurements (including the SM primary
mirror optic), and deliveries. SAO has awarded initial flight optics
contracts to two vendors. Each vendor will provide two initial pairs
of Primary and Secondary mirrors; the final four pairs will be ordered
from the vendor who supplies the initial mirror pairs on the earliest
date. SAO has contracted COI for fabrication of bond test model (BTM)
and FM pre-preg. Bond test flanges were shipped to COI and the SM
telescope tube SOW and fabrication specification were released.

Dr. Golub of SAO continued the investigation of the SiC/Mg coating as
a candidate for AIA. His review of recent multilayer results at the
Columbia University coating facility showed 5.8 time higher
reflectance at both 304 / 335 =C5 and 4 to 5 times better off-band
rejection than the SiC/Si coatings that are currently planned.
Stability results continue to be excellent, and will be tested further
on 5-year old Japanese samples next month.
