SESSION: S5 The Sun Today SESSION ORGANIZERS: DeRosa/Gurman/Bush SUMMARY: This session addres the needs and plans for daily summary data products, event recognition and logs, near real-time and quick-look data products. There are four primary user groups who might want such data: (1) scientists, (2) ops people, (3) forecasters, and (4) general public and media. SCHEDULE: Mainly a moderated discussion session. DeRosa will start off by putting up demo web pages, and explain how they will work, and what they will link to. Then the floor will be opened up to the audience for discussion. DEMO WEB PAGE: http://www.lmsal.com/~derosa/thesuntoday/thesuntodaydemo.html SPEAKERS: Marc DeRosa: initial presentation and moderator WHAT HAPPENED: This session addressed the needs and plans for daily summary data products, event recognition and logs, near real-time and quick-look data products. DeRosa showed his prototype "The Sun Today" web pages to the audience, and received a lot of feedback. The main points were: (1) More than one web page is likely needed to satisfy the various groups of users. For example, the web pages that accommodate the curious scientist should be different than the ones the public/media sees. (The prototype was decided to be a reasonably good example of the webpages for scientists.) (2) Long discussion about what the E/PO-type webpage should consist of, people with strong ideas were Tom Anderson and Barbara Thompson. (3) Joe Gurman thought that the derived data products bar (containing the light curves, field models, thermal maps, etc.) didn't belong on the same page as the raw data, but instead should exist on their own page. Unclear who agrees/disagrees with this statement. (4) An easy-to-use browsable, interface such as the prototype web pages are needed to browse the data for any day in the mission, given the volume of data. (5) It is less clear what the forecasters need or want on a NRT basis, and likely the instrument team should ask the forecasting crowd (SEC primarily?) to find out at some point. ATTENDEES: DeRosa, Lemen, Gurman, Thompson, Anderson, Eparvier, Hurlburt, Hoeksema, Biesecker, and a few others who I'm sure I've left out.
