Description

The publicly available GONG site data have a keyword PA for the position angle of solar north on the image, but it is uniformly set to 90.0. Additional information needed to correct the image position angle on a minute-to-minute basis is provided in a set of separately available coefficients for a polynomial expansion in the hour angle up to 5th order. These coefficents are contained in a separate set of files, one per day, containing the coefficients determined for each site, along with data for the Ronchi rulings during drift scans from which the coefficients are determined.

A minimal mrcoy file contains only the coefficients:

The Ronchi information is not included in this data series, however, nor are the coefficients for the testing site TC.

The series contains only a single prime key, Date. All metadata are contained in 36 keys, one for each order 0–5 and for each of the six GONG sites (LE, UD, TD, CT, BB, ML): a0_LE, a1_LE, ..., a5_LE, a0_UD, ..., a5_ML. There are no segments for SUMS data associated with this series.

It may be noted that although the expansion coefficients are recorded to 5th order, the 5th order coefficients have always been 0.0 to date. Likewise, the a4 coefficients have been identically 0.0 for sites LE, UD, and ML, and are non-zero for a small fraction of the 8447 days included to date: 353 for TD, 676 for CT, and 10 for BB.

Processing Status

The records in this series have been populated from the mirrored GONG mrcoy files by the script ~rick/gong/updpacordb. using the module append_mrcoy

Records have been completely populated from 2000.01.01 (before the advent of GONG+ site data),a nd are regularly updated as mrcoy data become available, usually about twicea month.

A Note on metadata in the GONG pre-merge site data

The mrcoy coefficients are used to set an OFFSET keyword value for the corrected position angle for each site image. A comparison has been made of the keywords in the final pre-merge FITS files for Dopplergrams at five sites on 2023.03.25 with the comparable files from the mirrored site vzi data. The comparisons are based on the first and last common images for each site:
